Overview

Choosing the right paint color can be overwhelming — especially when faced with endless swatches and product lines. The Home Depot set out to make this process easier, more intuitive, and even enjoyable, by harnessing the power of conversational AI.

I led the design for this end-to-end experience, working closely with stakeholders and product leadership to bring the vision to life. Our goal was to create something that felt like having a knowledgeable paint expert right in your pocket — someone who understands your space, your style, and the nuances of color selection.

Experience

At the heart of the experience is a conversational AI that helps users navigate the decision-making process.

Tailored to user needs

Whether you're starting from scratch or have a mood or inspiration in mind, the AI engages in a natural dialogue to surface tailored product recommendations. It draws from the entire Home Depot paint catalog to help customers find the perfect colour for their home — and ultimately purchase it with confidence.

For those who prefer a more structured approach, we designed a selection-based flow that allows users to explore colours through visual navigation, curated palettes, and suggested combinations. The hybrid experience means users can switch between guided conversation and manual exploration seamlessly — blending intuitive UI with personalized assistance.

We also built a color refinement flow for users who come in with a specific shade already in mind. Here, they can fine-tune tones, explore related hues, and see how a colour might look in their own space with visualization tools and photo upload options.


Dynamic chat bar

A key interaction was the dynamic chat bar — an adaptive UI element that contextually surfaces throughout the journey. It nudges users at just the right moments, offering help, suggestions, or prompts based on behavior. It also supported features like image-based color matching and smart prompts based on room type, lighting, or mood.
